Abstract

The book traces the main stages of third mission and social impact assessment, in the context of the (recent) history of higher education and research assessment in Italy, starting with a review of the transformation of the relationship between the University and the society. Several social drives are leading the university to a series of transformations, at the national, European and international level. The requirement to use transparency criteria and the associated returns of research spending (in accountability) has become a fundamental issue in informing government, business, citizens and society on the achieved results. The introduction of social impact assessment frameworks is also advancing research agendas towards socially relevant domains, to provide solutions in international competitiveness, social welfare, sustainability and other grand challenges. A terminological and conceptual shift is occurring from a traditional concept of technology transfer and third mission towards a broader meaning of knowledge exchange and co-creation between universities and extra-academic actors and the impact generated. However, this shift towards a transdisciplinary, trans-epistemic and inclusive evaluation framework poses new challenges to capture this complexity, requiring the adoption of new methods and tools presented in this book. The international literature and debate on practices are vital combined with trial-and-error approaches, community involvement, and targeted pilot studies. Beyond controversies, resistances, and easily contrived enthusiasms, this is what this volume tries to investigate.

Abstract

Practical Research Methods for Nonprofit and Public Administrators, Second Edition, covers basic principles of research design, data collection, data analysis, reporting and ethical principles of research. The discussion describes the skills as they would be used in practice in a not-for-profit or public administration environment. The book gives pragmatic instructions for designing research to ensure that results will be accurate and administrators can have confidence in them. It covers techniques to assure that researchers are measuring what they intend to measure and in a way that will be useful and manageable. Sampling methods to find out about larger populations are discussed as are survey, interview, and focus group data collection procedures. The book describes how Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to obtain information on the locations of service needs and providers and to draw maps showing these. Participatory research methods including community needs assessments and asset mapping are discussed. The book includes chapters on statistical analysis, visual displays of data, reporting of results and evaluation of programs. The use of computer programs for analyzing data is detailed and illustrated by examples. The appropriate software for analysis and mapping is discussed. A chapter updates the ethics and government requirements for research. Each chapter includes examples and exercises to enhance learning. The book is intended for administrators in not-for-profit and public administration organizations, providing practical skills that can be used in many situations. It is also intended for use as a text in academic programs in administration and management.

Abstract

This book gathers a selection of peer-reviewed research papers presented at the joint IV ASOCIO/XIX IISE Region 16 Conference held in Chia and Bogota, Colombia. The conference was organized by the Universidad de La Sabana’s Research Group on Logistics Systems, in partnership with Chapters #782 (Universidad de La Sabana), #712 (Universidad Sergio Arboleda) and #988 (Universidad de Los Andes) of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE). The main emphasis of the book is on modelling and solving business-related problems in operations research, and on applying descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics and the management sciences to actual decision-making in organizations. Both theoretical developments and algorithm implementation are presented. A special focus is given to business problems arising in emerging economies, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. This book is addressed to academics, practitioners, postgraduate students and researchers in operations research, analytics and industrial engineering, as well as to undergraduate students for educational purposes. In particular, the book will appeal to the academic and research community in Latin America and the Caribbean, as it presents projects developed and implemented there. Higher education engineering programs will benefit from the findings and insights shared in the fields of industrial engineering, operations research and analytics, applied mathematics, and computer science and engineering.

Abstract

"Many students (and also supervisors) struggle with their final academic projects (and their supervisions). This struggle has taken away from the great potential of a learning experience the thesis, dissertation, or capstone project has to offer. We invite our readers to learn and reflect our thoughts on how a final academic project can turn into a purposeful journey of scientific entrepreneurs - and not just the final examination to be crossed off before finally being allowed into "the real world". This book contains reflections on and suggestions how to tackle 50 common challenges that students tend to struggle with when working on the final academic projects of their bachelor's, master's or doctoral programmes. The presented mindsets are reflections by the co-founder and today's managing director and a core faculty member of the eleven-year number-1-ranked (Financial Times Global Master's of Management Ranking) Master in Strategy and International Management at University of St. Gallen. The mindsets are contextualised by the thoughts of 10 academic mentors from around the world and across disciplines. Our thoughts captured in this book do not deal with specific methodology, theory, and ways to cut corners, complete faster and easier. Instead, we focus on academic culture and a purposeful attitude for young, talented, and motivated human beings who seek to apply their academic skills to help solve problems. We instruct our readers to experience the process of their final academic project as a self-directed, productive, and healthy challenge and not a grinding overload"--

Abstract

Today's social and behavioral researchers increasingly need to know: "What do I do with all this data?" This book provides the skills needed to analyze and report large, complex data sets using machine learning tools, and to understand published machine learning articles. Techniques are demonstrated using actual data (Big Five Inventory, early childhood learning, and more), with a focus on the interplay of statistical algorithm, data, and theory. The identification of heterogeneity, measurement error, regularization, and decision trees are also emphasized. The book covers basic principles as well as a range of methods for analyzing univariate and multivariate data (factor analysis, structural equation models, and mixed-effects models). Analysis of text and social network data is also addressed. End-of-chapter "Computational Time and Resources" sections include discussions of key R packages; the companion website provides R programming scripts and data for the book's examples.
